China has reached new level in exploration by drilling a 10,000 meter deep well
On March 4, 2024, the depth of drilling of the Shenditake-1 ultra-deep well reached 10,000 meters, which became a significant achievement in China’s geological exploration. The design depth of the well, located in the Taklamakan desert, is 11,000 meters. This makes it one of the deepest in the world.
The project is being implemented by the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The Shenditake-1 well is designed for scientific exploration, oil and gas exploration, as well as studying the internal structure of the Earth. She has already passed through 13 continental formations, using more than 1,000 drill pipes and over 20 drill bits.
According to Wang Chunsheng, CNPC’s chief expert on the Tarim oil field, this is the first vertical well in China to reach a depth of over 10,000 meters. However, serious technical challenges remain ahead, including high temperatures and reservoir pressure.
The Shenditake-1 project is part of China’s larger deepwater exploration development program, including similar work at the Shendi Chuanke 1 well in Sichuan.
