New polymer reagents have been developed in Russia to combat catastrophic absorption of the solution

Scientists have presented a new polymer insulating material for drilling, which will help to cope with catastrophic absorption of drilling mud. This phenomenon often occurs due to cracks and sinkholes in formations, which leads to significant fluid losses and increased costs for well construction.

The developed material, called “STEAM”, combines the properties of a crosslinked polymer and a cement mortar. It prevents spreading and effectively isolates cracks, adapting to the structure of the formation. The composition undergoes three phase transitions: first it is pumped as a liquid, then it is “stitched” into an elastic state and hardens, which allows it to withstand hydrodynamic pressures.

The new reagent is characterized by a short setting time (five minutes) and resistance to erosion under the action of reservoir waters. This will reduce the volume of injected materials and speed up the process of well construction.

The development has already been tested and is ready for use, which promises to improve drilling efficiency and reduce operational costs.
